Flower Dog
I was excited to try a floral background, against black, so the colors really popped. And I LOVE it.
But I have to tell you I almost abandoned this painting so many times. The flowers about killed me.
I employed every trick in the book with this one…grids, projection, free-hand, tracing, over-painting, etc. and they were all hard and time-consuming for me. Other self-taught artists, and maybe even artists who went to school can relate to seeing an image in their mind’s eye, and then struggling mightily to bring it to life.
That being said, in some ways, this might be my favorite painting yet. And not just because it was hard. I love how this dog’s face is kind of stylized, in contrast to the hair by hair rendering of the rest of the body. And the way the black background falls away from the rest of the painting.
I don’t have a strong sense of this dog’s backstory or personality traits. It’s like they exist for me outside of my imaginings, in a separate dimension, just Dog, Flower, Space.
PS: I’m definitely doing a floral background again. I can do it!
Acrylic on canvas 48” x 48” x 2”
